Conflict Within the Frozen Planet of Icesky

There are planets traveling around most of the stars. Some of them, like our Earth, orbit in that band we call the sweet spot, just close enough and just far enough from their star to produce life as we know it. These are the most favorable planets for organic surface life. They pool in water and bask in solar warmth. Such worlds hold potential for a biosphere to live from miles above through miles below ground level. These are the exception. Most life lives deep within the worlds of planetoids, moons, and planets.

Typically intelligent beings evolve in worlds where life will emerge in oceans deep beneath their frigid surface both protected and shutoff from external radiations. One such world shares a parallel, yet most contrasting evolution to our own. It is the moon called Icesky. Along with many other moons and asteroids, they orbit a rogue planet four times Saturn’s mass. This undetectable system of cold worlds and planetoids is located about three light years from our Sun and two light years from Proxima Centauri.

Icesky has found its own sweet spot with a stable, slightly off-center orbit.  Even though is misses the radiation from a burning star, seasonal forces heats the moon’s core. This ongoing friction and pressure of Icesky’s tidal forces formed an Earth-like molten mantle churning about its iron core. Aside an early history of fissures erupting water through its frozen crust into orbiting ice crystals, it has never journeyed so close to its planet as to tear open. Midst the great depths and pressure of Icesky, life managed to evolve. It has an eco-system to support many epics of living forms. What is doesn't have is a ski of starlight.

Through the ages a global ocean brought forth evolution of all sorts where life is interdependence on one another creating a staple survival. The first eyes sensed using inferred light to see the red glow of warmth. ‘Up’ are the cold dark waters capped by a composite of icy Terra, while ‘Down’ is the blessed source of heat, light, all that creates and sustains life.

The story setting is 10 million years after the great pockets of atmosphere were generated by life within the ocean. They brought forth floating continents of plant life. In turn, this allowed creation of air breathing animals in all sorts. For the last three million years intelligence bodies much like our own have flourished. They live on these islands of floating plant matter that sink miles deep and rise like peeks of an iceberg.

The people of Icesky eat of the ocean and land, both plants and animals. Their vision has evolve to include a full spectrum of light from inferred through green. Theirs is a near parallel evolution to Earth’s and yet socially so very different. Their daring scientists are about to bore the depths of their icy terra sky to discover an opening. The consequences to social and cultural behavior is about to change an extremely conservative body of core beliefs.
